4-ingredient margaritas

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

this margarita skips the mix and opts for flavor from just 4 ingredients including freshly squeezed lime and a little bit of simple syrup.  then it’s all poured over crushed ice for the perfect light & refreshing drink for warmer weather!

I’m admittedly not the biggest drinker, but I do love a good glass of red wine (or sangrina!) and a delicious margarita when I’m in the mood.

For years I avoided margaritas because the sugary mix they are so often made with made me feel queasy at first sip (let alone finishing the whole thing).

4-ingredient margarita // cait's plate

It wasn’t until I was working at Health Magazine and Bethenny Frankel (who contributed an article to the magazine each month) came up with the Skinnygirl margarita that I started liking them. We hosted a launch party for her and served her margarita and I tried it (thinking I would just take a sip so as not to be rude in front of her and all her guests!) and I loved it! It wasn’t overly sugary or sweet but also didn’t taste like pure alcohol (like some of the other skinny versions I had tried).

Over the years I’ve experimented with my own versions and this 4-ingredient one is my go-to. Since it’s Friday (and Cinco de Mayo is this weekend!), I figured it was high time to share it with you all. Hope you love it as much as I do!

Description

this margarita skips the mix and opts for flavor from just 4 ingredients including freshly squeezed lime and a little bit of simple syrup.  then it’s all poured over crushed ice for the perfect light & refreshing drink for warmer weather!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons silver tequila
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeeze lime juice – see note #1
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup (store-bought or make your own! – see note #2)
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • For serving: crushed or cubed ice, kosher salt, fresh lime wedges or slices

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients into a large pitcher or cocktail shaker and stir or shake to combine.  Add additional water, lime juice or simple syrup as needed to suit your needs.
  2. Swipe the rim of a glass with a lime wedge to wet it then dip the rim in kosher salt
  3. Place ice cubes in the salt-rimmed glass then pour in your cocktail (note: you can also shake everything up along with the crushed ice as desired).

Notes

  1. I recommend pouring the freshly squeezed lime juice through a strainer in order to remove any pith
  2. For simple syrup: combine equal parts water & sugar.  In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar and water whisking until smooth (don’t let it boil!) then allow to cool before adding.
  3. I have also added 1-2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice (in lieu of the typically utilized Cointreau, an orange-flavored liqueur) in the past with good results and a slightly sweeter taste.
  4. You can puree different fruits in a food processor or blender and add 1-2 tablespoons for different flavors (watermelon works very well with the lime!).  I recommend using half the agave if doing this as the fruit purees add sweetness.  You can always add more as desired.
  5. Recipe is intended for those of legal drinking age.  Please always remember to drink responsibly and never drink and drive.

Keywords: margarita, tequila, drink, cinco de mayo
