As those of you that follow me on Instagram already know, we spent the long weekend in Charleston, South Carolina and had such a lovely time.
Where we ate & drank:
Butcher & Bee – This place was a little off the beaten path but I’m SO glad that we made the walk over to it. Not only is the food absolutely delicious, but the ingredients are sourced locally meaning you eat right along with the seasons!
Poogan’s Porch: This was by far our favorite meal while in Charleston. The biscuits brought out before the meal were fluffy and warm, the fig cosmo was delicious and the salmon was amazing. My only gripe was that we didn’t get a chance to go back for brunch!
Black Tap Coffee: This was obviously one of my absolute favorite places. Not only was the soy latte phenomenal, but the whole atmosphere was so calm and inviting. I would spend a lot of time here if I lived in Charleston!
Belgian Gelato: Located right on King’s Street, this is a perfect place to stop while strolling back from dinner. I went with the belgian chocolate peanut butter flavor and could not have been more satisfied. As an extra bonus, the portion sizes are perfect!
City Lights Coffee: This was right on our way to Toast! and while the service was a little slow, they made a dang good iced soy latte!
Toast!: We did a super late brunch here and while it felt a little chain-restauranty, we were more than happy with the food and the service!
Hominy Grill: Our experience here was a little disappointing which was SUCH a bummer because it was definitely one of the places I was most looking forward to. We arrived at 10:30 in the hopes of catching breakfast at 11:30 and weren’t seated until nearly noon. All in all though the food we ended up eating was good and I would definitely like to come back for breakfast…maybe just not on a holiday weekend while a huge festival is also going on!
We also ate a dinner at The Rarebit one night, but wouldn’t recommend it – especially in a town where there are so many amazing eateries…it just wasn’t up to the standard Charleston set for us from the very beginning.
What we did:
Cruise to Fort Sumter: We took a nice (if not slightly crowded) 30 minute boat ride out to Fort Sumter while listening to some background on it and then were dropped off to explore for an hour (which was more than enough time) before cruising back. It was a great way to get out on the water for a little while and get a little history too!
Kayaking: We rented kayaks from Middleton Place and worked our way along the Ashley River. This was by FAR our favorite activity. The company we went through (Charleston Kayak Company) was incredible and definitely made the whole experience that much better. We both HIGHLY recommend doing this if you’re ever in Charleston! It’s a bit of a drive from downtown (about 30 minutes) but it’s completely worth it. If you don’t want to deal with the trip, you can stay right at The Inn at Middleton Place. It’s a beautiful piece of property with plenty to do. In fact, if we did this trip again, we’d definitely stay there.
Other than that we just did a loooooot of walking around, exploring and getting a feel for Charleston!
It’s a great historic city with TONS of good places to eat and stuff to do – I highly recommend it if you’re ever looking for a little weekend getaway! Hope you all enjoyed your long weekends as much as we did!

I love the food photos! you look like you had such a great time 🙂 I love the happy couple photos, too, hehe, I’ve missed the day-in-the-life posts that you’ve had.
But honestly, more than anything, I love that bit of BC gear Chad has sporting. I cant believe that in two more years even I will be an alum!

Aw thanks! Glad you liked the recap 🙂 And haha yeah! We’re sure to represent BC everywhere we go 🙂 Enjoy your last two years – they go by too fast!!

Chad and I were talking about what a great place it is – you’re so lucky to have so much right around you! And I know – they guy at the kayaking place said the same thing about the humidity! I’m glad we lucked out there!! 🙂
I’m sad we missed each other (I blame Hominy Grill for taking 2 hours longer than we planned!) – we’ll definitely have to get back soon so we can meet up!

Agreed – I only wish we had more time there! There were so many other places I wanted to get to – but I guess it just gives me a good excuse to go back 🙂
Katie says
Oh man, you guys are THE cutest. I want to go on vacation with you! Or maybe just meet you in Boulder and have a mini vacation there. 🙂
Cait says
I vote for both options!!! 🙂

I went to Ft. Sumter when I visited Charleston a few years ago. I absolutely loved the city and want to go back terribly so I can experience it more fully. I was only there for a day! It looks like you had a wonderful trip.
Cait says
I definitely did! Although I hear ya on needing more time – we were there for 2.5 days and THAT felt too short! Hope you can get back at some point!

Charleston is so cute! And seriously LOVE your photography! We ate at Black Bean Co. while we were there. It was alright. I wish we got to explore more (we were only there briefly for a morning!)
Cait says
Aw thank you! And we passed Black Bean and Co. several times and almost stopped in – glad we weren’t missing anything huge! Definitely worth a trip back – it’s such a neat little place!

You definitely squeezed a lot of quality food and fun into one weekend! Next time you visit, try Kudu Coffee…it was always my favorite place for cappuccinos and craft beer in the evenings. http://www.kuducoffeeandcraftbeer.com/
