3-INGREDIENT WHOLE WHEAT PIZZA

2 · Jul 10, 2013 · 18 Comments

For those of you that have read the blog for a while, it will come as no surprise to you to hear that I absolutely love pizza.

pizza1.JPG

There was a long while where it made it into the top five in response to “what’s your favorite food?” question (cause let’s be honest, was I ever really going to be capable of choosing one food?)

Though my top 5 list changes pretty much weekly, I would say a good 85% of the time ‘pizza’ still sneaks its way in there.  It’s safe to say that I consume pizza at least one a week and one of my favorite ways to do so is this way.

Ingredients

This is my ‘I want homemade pizza but I’m too lazy to make pizza sauce and dough from scratch let alone figure out a way to form my own ball of mozzarella” pizza.

It’s a short-cut way to still have delicious and nutritious pizza at home, only it takes about 50% of the time and effort.

And note that while it does say “3-ingredient” pizza up there, the best part of this pizza is that it’s completely customizable.  You can use shredded mozzarella instead of fresh, you can use barbecue sauce instead of pizza sauce, you can top it with chicken, veggies, vegan cheese – pretty much anything goes and no matter what you add to it, it’s STILL going to be ready in just under 30 minutes…maybe even under 20 if you really want to push yourself.

{3-ingredient whole wheat pizza}

makes one pizza

ingredients:

  • whole wheat pizza dough (see note below)*
  • favorite pizza sauce (as much or as little as you like)
  • marinated mozzarella (as much or as little as you like)
directions:
  1. preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. meanwhile, grease a round pizza pan and spread with a bit of cornmeal (optional but it does help with stickiness).
  3. roll out pizza dough – i usually don’t even bother breaking out the rolling pin and dirtying a surface in the kitchen, it can easily be done by gently stretching the dough with your hands (being very careful not to break holes in the dough) until it’s a good size and then putting it on the pan and finishing the job there.  just keep pressing from the center outwards until you have a nice even, round circle.
  4. drop a ladle-full or two of pizza sauce (or whatever kind of sauce you prefer) in the center of the pizza and gently, using the back of the ladle, swirl your hand in a circular motion so the sauce moves outward towards the crust evenly coating the whole pizza (leaving a little bit of room for the crust of course)
  5. slice the mozzarella and place it on top of the pizza.  add any other toppings you prefer!
  6. cook on 425 degree F for 15 minutes (or until crust is cooked to your liking and cheese just begins to bubble and brown.
  7. remove from the oven, allow the cheese to cool, then slice and enjoy!

NOTE *this can be found at your local grocery store (usually near the prepared food section) OR you can go to your favorite local pizza shop and ask for it.  they’re usually more than happy to oblige (call first to make sure).  either way, it’s about $2 making it not only a time-saver but a money-saver as well!

Yay! I hope it does! Pizza on Fridays is something we always did growing up so it just reminds me so much of childhood 🙂

Also? All the pizzas you make always look incredible so I definitely vote bringing them back for the pictures alone! 🙂

Considering that last night I found more comfort in a meal of boxed pasta and jarred tomato sauce than I had in anything ‘fancy’ I’d eaten in awhile, this is right up my alley. Not to get all deep about it, but sometimes we overthink things too much, or worry too much about doing it all ourselves, when a little shortcut is nothing to balk at. 🙂

Oh my gosh, Cait! I’m doing Paleo right now (trying to get my sugar back in check after a crazy schedule moving to SD), but this pizza looks so darn good!! I love simple, homemade pizza pies.
