Breaking Up the Bliss

August 8, 2009 · 4 Comments

Sooo here’s how my morning started -

Ahh Saturdays. There are few things I love more than Saturday mornings. You have the whole weekend ahead of you and nothing to do, nowhere to…OH CRAP! I have an eye appointment that I’m supposed to be at!!

Luckily I remembered in just enough time to walk there but whew! If that’s not a way to wake up I’m not sure what is!

Before my realization I was able to blissfully enjoy an awesome breakfast of an Amazing Grass GREENSuperFood bar + the last of my vanilla Oikos

I love these bars. So greeny and delicious - you can practically feel the health benefits as you chew

Plus the iced coffee that Mike was kind enough to bring over for me -

What a guy

Speaking of Mike I’m off to watch his baseball game so lunch will be up a bit later than usual!

Hope it’s as beautiful a day where you all are!

Special Packages Make Me Smile

August 7, 2009 · 20 Comments

HAPPY FRIDAY!!

This day could not come soon enough.  I seriously had to DRAG myself out of bed this morning so I’m in definite need of a LOT of catch up sleep this weekend!

Since breakfast was just another boring egg white wrap + iced coffee, I decided to post about something MUCH more exciting!

Look what that awesome Kristina over at Oikos sent me!

img_0061

She had read about my moldy yogurt experience on the blog and was kind enough to send me a package full of awesome goodness!

Coupons for FREE Oikos of all sizes plus tons of other great savings -

img_0057

Is that not a beautiful sight to behold!?

img_0059

An awesome reuseable grocery bag which I am SO STOKED to use!  I love these things and pick them up at every grocery store I go to!  And this one is HUGE and feels so sturdy!

img_0056

And a lovely hand-written note

img_0060

Of course I don’t blame Oikos for the moldy yogurt, but rather that over-priced, ridiculous store!  But still, they’ve certainly done themselves a service by hiring such an awesome representative for their company!

Thanks Kristina!  This package brought a serious smile to my face and  I can’t WAIT to put these puppies to use

Question of the Day:

When you’re tired, what’s the first thing to go?  Exercise?  Eating well?  Social activities?

Have a GREAT Friday everyone!!

Mish-Mosh Dish-Tosh

August 4, 2009 · 15 Comments

Your favorite workout answers gave me SUCH motivation! I’ve never tried hot yoga, but I’m definitely curious to do it! It seems people either LOVE it or HATE it so I wonder which type I’d be…

Anyway – despite my HUUUUGE coffee this morning, I found myself really dragging around 1pm and fell prey to the Starbucks in our building

I devoured this guy! It was totally insane, but I guess I needed it. Just hope I can actually fall asleep tonight!

After work I headed to Best Buy and Staples to begin my camera hunt but I didn’t have much luck. I found one that I liked but of course they were out of stock. It’s probably better I didn’t buy anything today…I need to do a bit more researching before I commit

When I got home I contemplated going for a run but decided it was better to eat first since I had a somewhat early lunch.

Dinner ended up being a mish-mosh of wonderful!

I threw together a big salad topped with a veggie burger, almond slivers and half a gala apple -

Paired with a roly poly plum -

And some more o’ that delicious roasted corn -

Filling and delicious, just what I needed!

After dinner I was craving a little something sweet so I broke out the last of my rainier cherries -

I plowed straight through this stash. They call these “nature’s candy” and my-oh-my, they seriously couldn’t be more on point with that! I’m so sad they’re gone!!

I’m one exhausted girl so I’ll definitely be calling it an early night (guess I’ll be able to sleep after all!) but hopefully I can get a small run in first!

Off to digest/relax with Two and a Half Men for now though…Night everyone!

Check out my awesome Holy Yum! award over on Megan’s Munchies!

So cool, thanks Megan!! :)

Coffee+Bakery = A Happy Me

July 26, 2009 · 16 Comments

Shortly after eating breakfast Shannon’s friend Stefka came over to meet us so we could all head to the bakery.  We had wanted to walk but upon stepping outside and feeling how hot it was (and knowing photos would be taken – GIRLS! ) we chose the air-conditioned car instead.

On the way to the bakery we decided to stop at my faaaavorite coffee shop in Atlanta – San Francisco Coffee

P6270001

P6270002

I just absolutely love this place.  It has such a cozy, coffeehouse feel to it – plus, the coffee is awesome!

P6270005

P6270004

Oh yeah – and the bakery section is not so bad either

P6270003

Despite the fact that I knew we were bakery-bound right after this, I couldn’t resist buying a Vegan Banana Muffin (!!) to go along with my iced coffee

P6270027

P6270006

And as usual - Clara had to check out my coffee the instant we got back in the car

P6270008

Once sufficiently caffeinated, we headed over to Alon’s Bakery -

P6270011

Holy MOLY guys, this place was AH-MAZING!  There were so many delicious offerings I didn’t even know where to start!

P6270012

P6270014

But by far the thing that caught my attention the most was this -

P6270015

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DOUGH PEANUT BUTTER!!!!

It took ALL my restraint not to spend the $12 on this jar…but I’m still thinking I might need to go back and just do it!  I bet this is completely divine.  Maybe once Mike gets here he’ll want to buy it for me

I ended up settling on this beautiful loaf of whole wheat bread.

P6270018

It’s so pretty I don’t want to cut it!  But then again, it smells way too good to resist

We chatted and chomped for a while and then headed back home to hang out a bit longer.  It was so nice to finally meet Stefka as I’ve heard SO much about her from my sister!

P6270028

P6270020

When Stefka left my sister and I hit the beds for some much-needed naps to gear up for our trip to the Farmer’s Market!  I’m SO excited!!  Before we left I threw together a quick salad to fuel me through the rest of the afternoon -

P6270029

P6270032

The mix was: greens, cinnamon almonds, a Morningstar Farms Garden Vegan Burger and an apple.  Hit the spot.

These babies totally made the salad -

P6270035

P6270034

We’re off to surround ourselves in fresh produce!  My FAVORITE thing to do!!  Catch ya’ll on the flip-side

Flight Attendants, Please Prepare for Takeoff!

July 25, 2009 · 3 Comments

I’m HEEEEERE!

I couldn’t possibly more excited to be here in with my sister.  We’re pretty much inseparable and having her all the way down the east coast while she finishes her PhD program at Emory has been TORTURE for us.  Needless to say, we’ve been looking forward to this week for a verrrrry long time!  The only problem is that I know I’m never going to want to leave!

I was up bright and early this morning and started the day with @BobHarperAnthem -

Okay, well not REALLY with him, but with his awesome yoga DVD I tell you – if I could have him come to my house and train me everyday I would be in ridiculously good shape!

After yoga I showered, double-checked that I had everything and then whipped myself up a quick breakfast.

I had a egg white wrap with my very last gala apple while watching Friends -

100_4191

I didn’t get to the apple but I threw it in my bag and munched on it during the flight.

The second I got to Newark Airport I floated easily through check-in and security and made a b-line for the Starbucks!

100_4193

Grande iced coffee with soymilk – mmmm.

This fuel carried me through beautifully and now we’re off to find something for lunch.  I’ll give you a tour of the place and the rest of my meal recaps next post!

-

Technology Geek

I know I’m being  a total tech geek to be so excited about this – but my plan had wi-fi!  I was actually able to tweet and ichat throughout the entire two hour flight!  Despite hindering my plan to get some shut-eye, I thought it was SO cool and was really grateful for it!

Til next time everyone!

Who Needs Dunkin’?

July 22, 2009 · 20 Comments

Glad everyone enjoyed the KERF antics last night and sorry if I scared anyone away with my kookiness!  Every once in a while a girl’s just gotta get a little kooky, ya know?

This morning I had waffle egg white breakfast sandwich at Dunkin Donuts…wait a minute,

Who needs Dunkin’ Donuts to make a waffle breakfast sandwich??  Not me!

100_4044

I whipped this baby up right in my very own kitchen and it looked better, tasted better (I’m guessing) and was better for me!  Mine’s got 7 whole grains (on a mission!) and high quality protein with NO SATURATED FAT!

100_4047

The recipe was:

  • 2 Kashi Go Lean Original waffles
  • 1/3 cup liquid egg whites
  • 1/2 tbsp. sugar-free maple syrup
  • Smear of smart balance light healthy heart

I toasted up the waffles, smeared them with some smart balance, drizzled a little sugar-free maple syrup on each waffle, then laid the eggs in between and dug in!

T’was absolutely delish guys – if you have waffles lying around you should definitely try this out ASAP!  The only thing that could’ve made this better would’ve been some veggie sausage or some canadian bacon.  MmMmMmm!

On the side I had a white-fleshed peachy keen -

100_4045

100_4048

100_4043

I smell my iced coffee brewing up as we speak and can’t wait to slurp that sucker down!

Be happy, because iiiiit’s HUMPDAY!  Hooray!!

From SMASHED to PRESSED

July 19, 2009 · 9 Comments

I had a great sleep last night and woke up rested and ready to start my day.  I can’t believe it’s already Sunday – where do the weekends go!?

Since yesterday I had a SMASHED bagel, I decided to PRESS my breakfast today

I made an egg white panini on an Arnold Whole Wheat Sandwich thin -

100_3907

Mmmmm.

I can’t believe I haven’t done this before!  It was so easy and so tasty!  I simply cooked up the egg whites, seasoned with a little salt + pepper, then slipped it between the two bread halves.  After allowing time for it to heat, I coated my Foreman with a little Pam Olive Oil cooking spray , popped the sandwich in (lid down) – and 5 minutes later, viola!

I have a feeling you guys might start seeing a large influx of paninis in the coming days

On the side I had HUGE white peach:

100_3908

And the rest of my iced coffee from yesterday:

100_3909

Together in all it’s delicious glory…

100_3904

I’m not sure what we’ve got planned for the day, but I definitely hope BAKING makes it on the menu at some point I’m wanna rock out these Health-y babies to bring into the office!

Hope you all have fun plans for this beautiful Sunday!

I was over on HangryPant’s site earlier today and she was seeking some healthy Indian food advice.  I myself find it difficult to pick out the “healthy” options when it comes to ethnic food and always make sure to do a little research before I go.  I thought I’d share my gatherings on Indian cuisine with you today so next time you go, you can feel a little more informed!

Remember though – these are only my opinions based on research I have done, this is not to be taken as medical advice!

Best Choices -

  • Any sort of lean meat (poultry, seafood) – these are often served as “tandoori” “kebabs” or “tikki” – all good options
  • Any legume (most often used in Indian cuisine are chickpeas and lentils)
  • Of course any sort of veggies – most places have TONS of delicious vegetable dish options
  • Basmati rice (try to stick to 1/4 cup serving)
  • Soup (Mulligatawny or lentil are your best bets)
  • Pappadums (typically it is made from lentil, chickpea, black gram or rice flour) Note – these are sometimes baked, sometimes deep-fried so make sure to ask your server!
  • Roti (made from wheat flour and normally eaten with curries or cooked vegetables)

Things To Watch Out For -

  • Gulab jamuns (made of a dough consisting mainly of milk solids, often including double cream and flour, in a sugar syrup flavored with cardamom seeds and rosewater or saffron)
  • Bhaturas (A typical recipe includes white flour, yogurt, ghee or oil, and yeast.  Rolled into small balls then flattened – the bread is then deep fried.  A cholesterol-free version would be kulcha, which can be baked but still contains the same ingredients)
  • Ghee” which is basically clarified butter
  • Molee” which consists of coconut milk or cream
  • Korma” which is a cream sauce, and other creamy sauces (such as curry)
  • Pakoras (Pakoras are made by taking two or three ingredients, such as chicken, onion, eggplant, potato, spinach, cauliflower, tomato or chilli, dipping them in a batter of gram flour and then deep-frying them)
  • Anything fried (despite how delicious those samosas are, they are PACKED with fat)

Now that you know how to navigate, go forth and enjoy!!

See ya for lunch!

Totally SMASHED!

July 18, 2009 · 13 Comments

Morning Everybody

I slept until 8:15 today!!  To preface that, I’m a notorious early riser so sleeping anywhere past 7am is “late” for me.  It felt wonderful and I think I definitely needed it after so many early mornings this past week.

Harry Potter was GREAT last night!  I really loved every minute of it.  I laughed, I cried, I’ve already made a countdown to the next one

On the way home I wanted a little something sweet so we stopped Starbucks and I got a tall mocha frappuccino blended light:

100_3857

Mike and I only had a few sips each then I popped it in the freezer to save for another time.  Took care of my sweet tooth perfectly without getting ice cream!  Are you guys proud?!

The only bad part of the night was getting absolutely POURED on during our walk from the theater to the subway…but it quickly looked up when some nice guy just offered to let me keep him umbrella!!  It was quite possibly the nicest gesture a stranger has ever displayed.  It really touched my heart and totally restored my faith in humanity.  I’m going to have to find a way to pass it on in the next few days -

Aaaanyway – when I woke up this morning my appetite was hiding (), so I started in on some tasks that I wanted to check off my list – laundry, cleaning, a few errands, etc.

By the time I finished I still wasn’t very hungry but figured I should at least eat something – and that’s when I walked straight past this guy:

bagel smashery south

I’ve been wanting to try the Bagel Smashery since moving to Hoboken but got in such a routine with my regular bagel place that I’d always forget!

You pick your bagel, you pick your fillings and then you choose whether you’d like it SMASHED or SOBER.  HAH!  Love quirky things like that…

100_3865

0718090907

I chose a whole wheat bagel with 2 egg whites and taylor ham (which is like Canadian Bacon) smashed:

100_3861

On the side I had some white cherries which I picked up along with some more white peaches:

100_3860

And a couple choice beverages

100_3863

It was delicious and WAY filling.  This may just end up being more of a brunch than a breakfast!

100_3858

I didn’t have room for the cherries after the sandwich so I’ll have those to snack on throughout the rest of the morning.

Time to go spend some time outside on this nice day!  Hope you all have fun Saturday plans!!

Question of the Day:

What does your ideal Saturday entail?

A Happy Harry Hump Day!

July 15, 2009 · 10 Comments

Happy Hump Day!!

I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday!  This week seems to be flying by!  Probably because it’s been packed with fun things and early bedtimes – gotta love those early bedtimes.  Isn’t it funny to think we actually resisted them when we were kids?  Now, if I can get a nap in, it totally makes my entire day.  Haha.

I suppose it’s appropriate to give a “Happy Harry Potter Opening Day” shout out as well.

SOURCE: http://thecia.com

I’m a huge fan of these books and movies and quite excited to see the final in what I thought was an amazing series.  If only they could’ve gone on forever…

Last night when I got home from dinner I found myself wanting a little something more so I had a quick glass of light soymilk with a Oats & Chocolate Fiber One bar –

Picture 028

I know I’ve said it before – but I’m a big fan of these bars.  They’re actually the Market Pantry-brand version of the Fiber One bars, but they just have the best consistency – soft and chewy with a great heft to them.

This morning I was up bright and early once again - which was awesome.  I think my body clock may have finally adjusted to getting up early and I’m loving itThere’s nothing better than having time to yourself in the morning to do whatever you want; everything’s just so peaceful before the rush of the day gets started.

I chose to go on a nice 20-minute run this morning before starting in on breakfast.  It was perfect weather out there – finally it’s starting to feel like a true summer!

When I came home I toasted myself up some Kashi Go Lean waffles dabbed with a little smart balance and had some strawberries and egg whites on the side.

Picture 034

Gotta love those juicy strawberries

Picture 032

And this toasted goodness:

Picture 033

It was the perfect breakfast – exactly what I needed to refuel after my run

With a little iced coffee + light soymilk of course:

Picture 025

It’s Wednesday people – we’re almost there!  See ya for lunch

Question of the Day:

Are you a Harry Potter Fan?

Something Fruity This Way Comes

July 13, 2009 · 5 Comments

Morning everyone!

I woke up this morning NOT having to pull myself out of bed which is always a good way to start off the week   I thought about going for a run but figured I’d rather not have to rush to get everything else done, so I’ll save it for tonight.

Given that I wasn’t exercising I started right in on breakfast.

Picture 008

I made myself some egg whites which I delicately stuffed into a leftover pita half from Pita Grill and paired with a handful of perfectly ripe strawberries

Picture 010

Picture 007

Followed by the icey goodness:

Picture 018

And to leave you with a little cheer for this Monday morning I present you with some awesome pictures:

Yesterday while walking home from our pedicures Michelle and I passed by just one of the many stores in Hoboken that puts their armoatic summer produce out on display.  THIS is what all of Washington Street smells like as you walk down it:

Hopefully now my summer love affair with fruit makes a little more sense

Question of the day – what’s your favorite summer fruit?
