PEPPERONI GARLIC BUTTER PIZZA BREAD

1 · Aug 8, 2012 · 28 Comments

Can I ask you guys something?

IMG 0849

Why does pizza taste better when it’s rolled up?

IMG 0855

I’ve always been a pizza folder.  My whole life.  In fact, I’ve even gotten so creative as to start piling salad into the middle of my pizza fold and eating it all together.

It’s like a one-stop meal all in one bite – veggies, protein, carbs.  How on earth can that be a bad idea?

Whatever, you can make gross faces at me – it’s delicious.

IMG 0886

You know what else is delicious?

IMG 0870

Rolled up bread dough disguised as pizza.

I mean, what is it?

Pizza?

Bread?

A calzone?

IMG 0898

Can it be a meal in and of itself or is it just a side dish?

A snack?

An appetizer?

I have to be honest with you guys.

I don’t really know what it is.  All I really know is that it’s delicious.  And you should eat it.  In whatever way, during whatever time you please.

Pepperoni Garlic Butter Pizza Bread

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 2/3 cups water, 80°–90°
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 3/4 cups bread flour
  • 6 tablespoons whole wheat bread flour
  • 1 1⁄4 teaspoons active dry yeast
For the Pizza Bread:
  • 1 – 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella (more or less if desired)
  • 1-2 handfuls of turkey pepperoni (more or less or none! if desired)
  • 4 tbsp. Earth Balance
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tbsp. dried oregano

Directions:

For the Dough*

  1. In a large bowl, combine water, honey, yeast and olive oil.  Mix together and set aside, letting sit until slightly foamy (about 8-10 minutes).
  2. Add in flours, salt, mixing until the dough comes together but is still slightly sticky to the touch.
  3. Form the dough into a ball with your hands adding additional flour if dough is too sticky.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes then place into a large bowl rubbed with oil rolling it around to cover the entire ball with the oil.
  5. Cover with a clean dish towel and place in a warm place to rise for about 1 1/2 hours or until dough is nearly doubled in size.
*If you prefer, you can also use 1 pound of fresh pizza dough bought at the grocery store or your local pizzeria.

For the Pizza Bread:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Remove the dough from the bowl and punch down with your fist.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle (dough should be about 1/4 – 1/2 inch thick).
  • Meanwhile, melt the Earth balance and combine with minted garlic clove.
  • Spread sauce, cheese and pepperoni onto rolled dough and then gentle roll the doll in on itself forming a roll up.
  • Brush the outside of the dough with the garlic butter, sprinkle with dried oregano and place in the oven.
  • Cook for 20-30 minutes or until top is browned, and cheese is bubbling.
  • Serve with a side of warmed marinara sauce for dipping.

Oh heeeck yes. So much better rolled up!

I made Meeker calzones ONE time when we were first married (trying to impress) and it was like the longest drawn out most laborious process of my life. Maybe I’ll cheat and by the pizza dough on this go-around. Although, these really do look worth it.

Definitely buy the pizza dough – it makes it a heck of a lot easier. And then throw lots and lots of meat in there. Maybe steak? Bison? He’ll be putty in your hands 🙂

This actually wasn’t as laborious as it seems, it went by surprisingly fast!

This reminds me of the stromboli my dad used to make when we were little. Ah, I love it SOO much more than pizza! I think because there was a lot more delicious dough involved. 🙂

Haha! I laughed out loud about the salad rolled up in pizza comment… Because I totally do that! I thought I was the only one.

And, I think that this would make a perfect appetizer. Especially if the entree was a salad-pizza roll. Seriously. Perfection.
